Difference Between Covert Narcissist and Narcissist

Covert narcissists and overt narcissists share many core traits associated with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), but they differ in how they express and display those traits. Here are some key differences between covert narcissists and overt narcissists:

1. Presentation and Behavior: Overt narcissists tend to exhibit more grandiose and attention-seeking behavior. They actively seek admiration, recognition, and validation from others. They may boast about their achievements, engage in self-promotion, and display a sense of entitlement. In contrast, covert narcissists appear more introverted and may present themselves as humble, self-sacrificing, or victimized. They may seek validation through subtle means, such as using guilt, playing the martyr, or indirectly manipulating others.

2. Self-Image: Overt narcissists have a more obvious and inflated sense of self-importance. They believe they are superior to others and may openly express this belief. In contrast, covert narcissists may struggle with a fragile sense of self-esteem and have an inner belief of superiority. They often rely on others to validate their worth and maintain their self-image as the "better" or "more virtuous" person.

3. Manipulation Tactics: Overt narcissists are more likely to use direct and aggressive manipulation tactics to maintain control and dominance. They may engage in gaslighting, blame-shifting, and overt criticism to manipulate and demean others. Covert narcissists, on the other hand, tend to employ more subtle and passive-aggressive manipulation tactics. They may use guilt-tripping, silent treatment, or victim playing to control and manipulate others while maintaining a facade of innocence.

4. Attention-Seeking: Overt narcissists actively seek attention and may dominate conversations, boast about their achievements, and demand recognition. Covert narcissists, however, may seek attention in more covert ways. They may use tactics such as appearing helpless, garnering sympathy, or creating situations where others feel compelled to rescue or support them.

5. Self-Awareness: Overt narcissists may have a higher level of self-awareness about their narcissistic tendencies, but they may not see it as a problem or be motivated to change. Covert narcissists may have limited self-awareness and may struggle to acknowledge or recognize their narcissistic traits due to their defense mechanisms and unconscious patterns.

It's important to note that these distinctions are generalizations, and individuals can exhibit a combination of both covert and overt narcissistic traits. Furthermore, narcissism exists on a spectrum, and individuals can vary in the intensity and manifestation of their narcissistic traits.

Understanding these differences can help in recognizing and navigating relationships with individuals who display narcissistic tendencies, but it is important to remember that only qualified mental health professionals can diagnose and treat narcissistic personality disorder.
